Weekly Reflections 2009 - Week 3

"Weekly Reflections" is my small journal of events that have gone on throughout the week that I've decided to keep. New updates to this will (hopefully) be posted every Sunday. Unfortunately, this update is late again due to a number of things that I've been doing in preparation for school.
Last week was a pretty busy week for me, with school starting and all. On Sunday, Ashley and I went to Applebees together as one of the last times we'd be able to go to a sit-down restaurant before I went back to school. On Sunday, I also found out my brother had begun to play World of Warcraft, which I promptly exclaimed "Blasphemy!" That evening, my brother, Ashley & I all went to see "Yes Man," finding that it was quite amusing in a "Bruce Almighty"-esque style.
Monday was a pretty normal workday with very little in the way of anything new, except for the news that Google was dropping a number of its services, of which Google Notebook was one of them. I was particularly bummed about this as I relied on Google Notebook quite a bit for personal, work, and school notes. Fortunately, I found Evernote which looks to be quite promising, but I am still trying to get acquainted with its somewhat awkward organization system.
Tuesday brought about the first day of classes for the Spring semester, which I hope to be the last semester for my Bachelor's. Unfortunately, I started the semester with a retake of my Discrete Mathematics course - if you've never taken this course, all I can say is that I got a C- (which apparently was passing but not valid for credit towards my degree) in the course and from what I've heard, it takes students 2 or 3 times, maybe even more, to finally pass the class and get on with their degree.
Tuesday also brought about one of the most important events in the history of the United States, where Barack Obama had officially become our nation's 44th President. Even though I knew he'd become President, there is something very unreal about knowing that an African American has finally won the Presidency, and I am wholeheartedly pleased to be in this nation at a time when the ironclad walls of racism in this country are finally being torn down - much in the way the walls in Berlin finally were torn down. Unfortunately, I missed the Inauguration because of my Discrete Math class. :(
Wednesday was quite interesting, since it was the first time during school where I actually rode the Sprinter to school rather than drove. Unfortunately, I misjudged time and woke up at 4:45am, only to get there an hour early. I also misjudged time to get on the train and head back to work as I wrote down the wrong time that I got out of the class and ended up at work much later than originally planned. Wednesday also brought about the first successful utilization test in defining a report, which is a significant milestone especially after almost a year in active and almost-dedicated development.
Thursday was my first long school day, where I had a day like Tuesday (class at 9, working remotely from school at 10:30, then another class at 2:30), but I had another class from 5:30 to 8:15. Although the time spent in that last class is long, the class seemed to pique my interest, especially since its on computer graphics programming (in OpenGL). We'll have to see how things go.
Friday ended up being a very busy day at work, but I did make time to congratulate Ashley on finally taking her behind-the-wheel Driver's test and passing it the first time (with little experience too!) I took Ashley out to dinner at Love Boat Sushi to celebrate, but as the night wore on, I opened my big mouth and what was supposed to be a happy evening ended up going completely South. Needless to say, I was pretty ashamed of myself for having ruined the day so badly. She forgave me for just being concerned, but I still don't forgive myself for ruining her day.
Nothing much happened Saturday except for me shoving my face into my school books and doing homework.

Here are some articles that I ran across this week that were, to me, pretty interesting:
-Google to shut down Google Video, Notebook, Catalog Search, Jaiku, and Dodgeball [article]
-Barack Obama Sworn In As The 44th President of the United States of America [article]
-Epic WIN: 17,000 downloads does not equal 17,000 lost sales [article]
-The truth about Obama's middle name: Hussein [article]
-Replica Portal gun [article]
-Obama takes a re-do of his oath after mess-up [article]
-Girl sends 15000 Text messages in one month [article]
